Stand Up for the Bay-Delta: Comment at the State Water Board Workshop

Make a stand for increased flows that benefit fish, river health, and frontline communities.

The State Water Board recently released a new document for Phase 2 of the Bay-Delta Quality Control Plan, and will host a workshop and opportunity for public comment on January 23. This is a critical juncture for community input and participation.

The sprawling Bay-Delta watershed includes all tributaries of the San Joaquin and Sacramento Rivers, including the Tuolumne River. Phase 2 focuses on the Sacramento tributaries and the Delta, and it will set a precedent for how flow rates are determined in this system.

Competing with the Bay-Delta Plan are Voluntary Agreements—supported by the water diverters—that propose half measures that won’t get our rivers flowing. It’s critical that we convince the State Water Board to stand strong, reject the Voluntary Agreements, and adopt the scientifically-vetted Bay-Delta Plan.

This is not just an opportunity to contribute to environmental conservation but also a wonderful way to connect with fellow stewards and members of the community. This is a great event for the whole family!

Supplies and gloves will be provided.

Note: In the event of inclement weather, the event may be rescheduled or canceled. We will provide updates via email and our website.

Meadow & Stream Restoration Volunteer Day: Boney Flat Meadow

Meadow & Stream Restoration Volunteer Day: Boney Flat Meadow

A group of volunteers and TRT staff wearing bright green vests pose together at Boney Flat Meadow. The meadow is golden and dry and backed by rows of conifer trees. The sun is bright.

Join us this September for meadow & stream restoration at Boney Flat Meadow!

Join us for a dynamic volunteer day at Boney Flat Meadow as we build in-stream restoration structures (post-assisted log structures), weed invasive species, and collect native seed. Volunteers who attend will work together on meadow and stream restoration that helps slow the flow of water throughout the meadow.

Bring lunch, lots of water, and durable shoes that can get wet. Be prepared to work hard, get muddy and have a great time! Signups will close on Friday, August 30.

Meadows are essential to water quality and storage in the Sierra Nevada, and they need slow moving streams and creeks running through them which allow water to spread out and percolate into the land. These wet meadows then create habitat for myriad species, fire resiliency, carbon storage, and healthy functioning watersheds.

If you're looking to get outside, connect with rich meadow habitat, and do meaningful work to improve recreation access along the Tuolumne River, this work day is for you!

Whether you've done restoration work in your life or are brand new to it, we would love to have you join us at these events. We will provide all the tools and instruction you'll need to be safe and successful.

Learn more about TRT’s meadow restoration work on our StoryMap here.

*Please note that space will be limited & that exact location details will be sent out once you register using the form below. Signups will close on Friday, August 30.

Rafting & Restoring: Youth Rafting Trip Along the Wild & Scenic Tuolumne

Come whitewater rafting with us this July!

Central Valley residents, if you’re 16-19 years old and curious about whitewater rafting, camping, and planting trees, join us on our two-day rafting & restoration trip along the Wild and Scenic Tuolumne River from July 16-18.

During our one-day paddle, we will stop to plant trees that restore shady habitat and prevent erosion along parts of the river that lost much of their riparian plant life during the 2013 Rim Fire. We’ll camp in Groveland, California on the nights before and after our river trip.

Rafting this stretch of the Wild and Scenic Tuolumne will connect participants with the tranquility of a wild river, the humbling excitement of whitewater, and the joys of ecological restoration, while developing each person’s own power and capacity as recreationists, leaders, and environmental stewards.

Through intentional and innovative programming, TRT engages youth who are changing how we think and talk about outdoor adventures and stewardship. Join us!

Travel and program costs are free, and you don’t need to have rafting experience or equipment to join us.

Space is limited to 9 participants; if you are a Central Valley resident who is interested in joining us this July, please fill out the interest form below. Have questions? Reach out to TRT staff at cvteam@tuolumne.org

Park Youth Committee Resolution Presentation at Modesto City Council

Join us next Tuesday, May 7, at 5:30 PM, as the Park Youth Committee (PYC) presents their newly completed Resolution for Equitable Parks and Protective & Healthy Environments.

The May 7th City Council Meeting may be historic; if passed, the Park Youth Committee's Resolution would be a milestone achievement for youth advocacy and park functioning for all of Modesto’s residents. PYC is a youth-led coalition funded by All Children Thrive and supported by the Tuolumne River Trust—the Committee champions safe and equitable park access and recreation for Modesto residents.

The PYC has worked in deep collaboration to develop a formal resolution solidifying the City of Modesto's commitment to their parks. The resolution is set to ensure parks operate with easily accessible amenities, infrastructures, and programs that benefit cognitive development, mental health, and community well-being; Park Ranger programs that increase community-safety; and citizen-informed participation for ongoing park projects and initiatives.

Developed through on-the-ground community data collection, neighborhood surveys, PYC visioning meetings, and collaborative decision-making processes, this resolution is the end result of years of community listening. Needs were heard and then transformed into a plan for actionable change.

Be a part of this actionable change with us and stand allied with emerging youth leaders!

No need to RSVP; meet us at City Hall!

Tuesday, May 7th

Rally for the River at SF City Hall

Rally for the River at SF City Hall

Join Tuolumne River Trust, Save California Salmon, Restore the Delta, Golden State Salmon Association, San Francisco Baykeeper, Delta Tribal Environmental Council, Sierra Club California, San Francisco League of Conservation Voters, and Great Old Broads for Wilderness during SF Climate Week, as we rally on the steps of San Francisco City Hall, followed by attendance at the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission meeting.

Earth Day Rally Agenda:
Tuesday, April 23

  • 12:00 pm: Gather on the SF City Hall steps (1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Pl.)

    • Tunes by Loose Licks Jug Band

  • 12:15-12:45 pm: Rally on the SF City Hall Steps with speakers:

    • Peter Drekmeier, Policy Director of Tuolumne River Trust

    • Cintia Cortez, Policy Analyst with Restore the Delta & Delta Tribal Environmental Coalition Representative

    • Scott Artis, Executive Director of Golden State Salmon Association

    • Eric Buescher, Managing Attorney at San Francisco Baykeeper

  • 1:00 pm: Brown bag lunch in Civic Center Plaza (bring your own lunch)

  • 1:30 pm: SFPUC meeting in Room 400 of SF City Hall

As the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission prepares their annual budget for a Board of Supervisors vote in June, we invite you to stand with the river! Join our rally to send a powerful message: The people want sustainable water policies that protect the environment, frontline communities, tribes, commercial and recreational fishing communities, and ratepayers.

Low flows along the Tuolumne River contribute to the decline of salmon populations, destroy Indigenous lifeways, create toxic algae blooms, and disrupt the food chain and cycle of life in the SF Bay-Delta and beyond. Excessive water storage, skyrocketing water rates, and low river flows are not the answer. With taxpayer water rates poised to rise and river flows diminishing, we encourage SFPUC to take the next steps towards a more sustainable community, economy and river ecosystem.

Please register to attend!  We are looking for motivated citizens like you to join us.
